The Korean Media is Insane

Or at least a lot of the people involved in it are. I have never come across an article that wasn’t drenched in biased writing and hidden agendas. I really, really disdain the media here because it never, ever has done a satisfactory job reporting on anything–everything is done to make anything not Korean look much worse than it is and anything that is Korean look much better than it is. =_= What bullshit.

This time it’s personal. They attacked my Arashi.

Below are links to three different articles:

http://www.tokyohive.com/2010/11/shukan-bunshun-reports-je-boys-sex-scandal/

– English article describing a scandal involving a failed talent that went into the porn industry and some Johnny’s boys.

http://sports.chosun.com/news/ntype2.htm?id=201011060100055550003135&ServiceDate=20101105

– Korean article describing the same news in its own “unique” way.

http://news.searchina.ne.jp/disp.cgi?y=2010&d=1107&f=entertainment_1107_013.shtml

– Japanese article that is asking wtf is up with the Korean media getting off to a scandal concerning Japanese celebrities.

Ok, I will say right off the bat that the only language I am fluent in is English, but I spent enough time looking at the Korean and Japanese article to understand what they are saying. I mean, I may not be fluent, but I can understand what they are saying ><

Here are some of the finer points that may not seem like such a big deal, but it’s a big fucking deal.

일본 아이돌그룹 아라시 멤버들이 자살한 AV(성인비디오)배우와 섹스 스캔들에 휘말렸다.

Ok, first of all, I’d like to point out that they name Arashi but make no mention of even the NAME of the girl who they had this “sex scandal” with, they just name her as a porn actress.

아야는 지난달 25일 자택에서 투신 자살한 AV배우로 토키오의 나가세 토모야, 카툰의 다나카 코키 등 쟈니스 소속 연예인과 스캔들을 일으켜왔다.

Alright, NOW they say her name, but then still goes on to say that as a porn star she had relations with other members of Johnny’s Jimusho (all the singer boys’ company name). She focuses on Arashi because they are the ones closest to completion (so to speak) having 4 out of the 5 members involved, but moreover because Arashi has the most popularity in Korea and Japan than any of the other groups mentioned. I think moreover, Arashi has just started airing promotional videos for traveling Japan in Korea recently, so it is a cheap way to kick Japan down a few notches, which is oh-so-tantalizing in this ever-lasting battle against Japan in the minds of Koreans. God, just stop it. ><

And then it ends like this, talking about how she really did like one of the members (wait, so you mean scandal as in she thought she loved him and maybe he did too? OMFG, WHAT A SCANDAL FOR TWO YOUNG UNMARRIED PEOPLE =_=) It goes on to talk about how they had lived together and what not, but there is no proof of that but heresay WHICH THEY FAIL TO MENTION because they don’t fucking feel like it. Then it ends saying that she only didn’t get around to Sakurai because he was in the midst of seeing another woman at the time she met him. Wait, so.. unless she means he was having sex with someone at the moment she met him (which I doubt), it seems like she means to say he was seeing someone else, if not in a relationship.

Now here is my big beef with the article:

#1: It makes such a big fucking deal about how she is a porn actress, but either the writer is a lazy fuck and didn’t do her research, or she failed to mention this because it helps to serve her purpose on making the scandal seem bigger than it is.. which is the fact that AYA was NOT a porn actress at the time that these scandals apparently took place. If you look at the very tame photos (most of them are just her with the boys, fully clothed, and a couple with them hugging [Tomoya] or kissing [Satoshi] her) and also take into account the date she proclaimed to have these affairs, they took place much earlier on in Arashi’s career, starting from when they first even entered Johnny’s (since she says she met Jun when he was in 8th grade-ish [2nd year of middle school in Japan] meaning he was 14 or 15 at most.. way before they even debuted. AYA had debuted as a pornstar in 2004, 5 years after their debut. Only after she released this did she become a porn star one year later–meaning before that she was just a failing talent.. she had been in a short-lived singing group before and spent the rest of her time trying to break in to be a racing queen (model). That means this crazy sex scandal with a pornstar that took place is not really so crazy and she wasn’t even a porn star at the time.. so stfu 백지은, you shitty, shitty writer.

#2: The whole article only details AYA’s (alledged) side of the story without mentioning what others have to say about it. It goes into detail about how she used to have pet names for the four member she had relations with, but failed to mention any of the reaction that was seen in Japan by the fans and general public, which was mentioned in the English and Japanese articles. She also conveniently leaves out the fact that AYA was not indeed a completely reliable source herself.. before her suicide she was very paranoid and believed to have a mental disorder of sorts to boot. This person doesn’t leave any room for doubt about any part of the scandal, instead she writes it as if it is almost absolute fact. She is really despicable.

This mentions that the Korean media includes the pictures of from the Shukan Bunshun to enhance the credibility of their article, which I must admit is fairly underhanded and effective. Pictures speak louder than words and since most Koreans will not care enough to see if it’s true or not, with pictures, whatever little tweaks they write to make things sound worse than they are to the public will in the end become more believable due to the credibility the pictures seem to give. Pathetic.

In the end, it is not such a huge matter to those who matter. The boys should be free to have relations, although it is against company policy for it to go public (which had no mention in the article.. also goes to show how little the so-called reporter knows about the situation). And I wonder where the scandal is? That all of them had at one point had sex with the same girl (save for Sho)? I’m sorry, was it a group orgy or something? No. Were they married or in a relationship at the time with someone else? No. Was she even a porn star at the time? No. And just in case you’re wondering, the age of consent in Japan differs from prefecture to prefecture, which means depending on exactly when and where they did have these alledged relations, AYA could be the one in the wrong and could have been having sex with a minor. Whoopsie~

Anyway.. that is all. Sheesh. ><”

That Tingling Sensation

I am finally listening to Arashi’s newest album in its entirety right now. Usually I would jump on any new things by them, but for the sake of a truly spectacular release such as this (they haven’t put out an album since 2008) I wanted to have time to really let it soak in.. not just background music.

When I listen to their music I well up with all kinds of emotion. The best is when there is a new release–I always get that tingling sensation. And no you pervs, it is not a sexual innuendo either. What I mean by tingling sensation is a kind of thrill that comes over me from hearing their familiar voices and style.. it’s a new song with new beats, lyrics, and perhaps even a twist on some other genre they are not accustomed to (rock, hiphop, etc). And I am surprised by their stuff most of the time as well, because well, it’s new -_-

That tingling sensation is not from the newness of the music though– the fresh elements are only pleasant additions to the true meat of it all–that is, when I hear their music, it’s never just a song as much as it’s like talking to an old friend. It is familiar like an old friend, but then no matter how much they changed since you last saw them, some things just never do. I feel a real connection to them through their music, which is honestly not something I can say for any other singer/group/band/artist/etc.

I want to write more.. but my brain is fried and I just want to finish catching up with my old friend now.. (=

Why I Love Arashi

One teacher asked me this while we were having lunch one day.

I sat there and thought hard about a suitable, concise answer for her. I couldn’t think of anything, so I tried to think of any number of reasons that I could say that would make sense to the non-fan that is unfamiliar with Arashi. Again, nothing.

So after looking constipated for a minute or two all I could muster up for her as my way of answering was, “그러게요.” -_- (it translates into something like, ‘yeah, huh?”)

There’s even a whole book someone wrote about this exact topic, so you can see why it’s a difficult question to answer.

It’s hard to answer because there is nothing exactly extraordinary about Arashi, which also happens to be the exact same reason fans love them so much.

.. as you can see, maybe a whole book is necessary to explain all this.

Do they sing well?

You could say that (I mean, Ohno is part of Arashi, so yes).

Do they dance well?

They aren’t the best, but again, sure (cause again, Ohno is in Arashi).

Are they funny?

When they are miserable and not meaning to be funny they are.

They are in many dramas and movies, so are they great actors?

Nino could be called a great actor, but even then..

Then it must be for other superficial reasons most boy bands are popular.. good-looks, charm, etc.

.. None of them are ugly, but in terms of just physical appearance, you can find much more handsome celebrities pretty much everywhere. And unless you find stockings-on-your-head, nipple-cut shirts, and tv program after tv program showcasing their spectacular failures charming, you will be at a loss to find any charm in these five.

So then.. what?

.. Arashi is simple, but in that simplicity is truth and honesty; they truly see themselves as not above any other people, but they also don’t delude themselves into thinking that they are just normal people either. Their humility and gratitude is always genuine, their friendship easy-going and real.

They all have a great attachment to the group itself and always express their thankfulness to have been part of it.

10 years is no small feat. Look at all the other Johnny’s groups or even outside of J-Pop itself–10 years is almost unthinkable to have gone without some huge scandals, group animosity, or just big problems in general. There were some close calls (like Ohno’s little incident with the press..) but when their fans and members themselves look back on those 10 years, you can’t recall a single big problem. They have remained pretty much the same group of 5 that we were introduced to a decade ago.

Their humor is still lame, their musical style not dramatically changed, their concert costumes (sadly still) horrendous, and yet we can’t get enough of them.

After 10 years of enormous, record-breaking success with an almost unthinkable amount of popularity, they have achieved so much and still they humble themselves and never let it deter them from continuing in the same fashion. They never let their success content them; they never did it for their own prestige. The ultimate. They just keep going, trying ever harder, letting their past successes fuel their desire to do better for the sake of those who helped them get there in the first place.

I love Arashi because they are so simple that it is just amazing. Even when they are on the cover of every magazine for months at a time, in the midst of hundreds of interviews blowing their 10 year anniversary up to epic proportions, getting unheard of airtime and special segments (even an entire effing week of TV domination, the Arashi Challenge?!), winning the most year end awards of any single artist, topping every damn chart Oricon has and being the first to ever do so.. still doing all this, they remain the same. They refuse to accept the grandeur and let it distract them.

Simply amazing. On top of the world and still the same Arashi.

It is more than a boy band, more than idols, more than just a group, more than celebrities; they give their fans hope, encouragement, happiness. When I see them do what they do, it doesn’t make me want to go do the same as many other celebrities and pop-stars can encourage their fans to feel, but it just makes me want to do better where I am now.

None of them went in with a set ambition to be some great big star (ok, maybe Jun), but still that’s where they are. And they do their best, not because of their own will to be recognized and to pump up their own ego, but because of the desire to do their best in the place they ended up.

There’s a reason for all this madness. Non-fans, sorry, but you’ll never understand until you look past all the superficial aspects you usually use as a yardstick to compare all other idols, artists, and celebrities in general. Cause if you do that, Arashi will surely not be on top. They are outside of all that, and that is the reason that I can say I love them so much.

what other group can have a special about their failures and showing them sleeping be so goddamn entertaining? (If you name some effing Korean show I will rip your balls off).

GANTZ Pre-premiere excitement

February 18, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s not the prettiest wallpaper, but it makes me sososo happy ^^ and it also very helpfully points out the two reasons why this is automatically my favorite movie of 2011 ^^V

The original is here:

I got it from the kanata_hongo community at LJ yeeee~

I really think this will be his ultimate breakthrough into mainstream (Hongo-kun, not Nino). He gained some notoriety with supporting roles in “Nana 2” and “テニスの王子様 [Tennis no Oujisama / Prince of Tennis]”, and following up with major roles in movies such as “青い鳥 [Aoi Tori / Blue Bird]” and finally a lead role in the movie “Goth”. He is pretty popular amongst young Japanese females right now as an up-and-coming ikemen (aka handsome/good-looking guy). After this movie though, I fully expect  him to be all around the magazines and media channels in Japan for at least a good year.

Why?

Cause first of all, GANTZ is a huge deal in and of itself. Maybe it’s not recognized worldwide such as other manga series like Dragonball, Bleach, etc. but in Asia or at least in Japan it is widely known and pretty damn popular. (Side note: both Nino and Hongo have commented that they loved the series for a long time and are honored to be able to take part in the live action.)

Now more popular than GANTZ right now is Nino himself. Please don’t argue with me on this, cause it is most definitely and indisputably true. With Arashi’s 10 year anniversary just passed, a new single coming out soon, and the members all busy with various projects, every promotion Nino gets is promotion for the movie as well.

Plus I believe the supporting lead (松山 ケンイチ / Matsuyama Kenichi) has a considerable fan following as well, having roles in doramas like “1リットルの涙 / [Ichi rittoru no namida / 1 Litre of Tears]” and “ごくせん[Gokusen]” as well as being the original Shin in the first “Nana” movie (heh cool connection to Hongo-kun there huh? ^^). He was in some movies that were based on famous Japanese authors’ works as well, but I doubt he would have garnered much fan following from that, although it did probably give him more credibility as an actor. And also, from what I know, his fan following is different from those who follow Nino / Arashi, so he could bring in those fans as well.

Then there are just the tag-alongs and die-hard fans. Die-hard fans of numerous stars appearing in the movie besides the aforementioned (check out the picture below! Miura Haruma is even playing a small role! kkkkk) will come to see it and the tag-alongs will follow their friends who happen to fall under one of these 3 categories (recap: 1) fans of GANTZ 2) fans of Nino / Kenichi 3) fans of other stars in the movie, including our beloved Hongo <3)

Much love for this project and let’s wish them luck in our anticipation! ^^V

Look, they are so excited already~ And even riida is getting into it by helping shout out the news of his Nino’s new movie (= kkkkkkk

I did not make that, but I don’t remember who did -_- someone on livej?? if it’s you and you want credit, leave me a comment please.

Plan B

February 17, 2010 Leave a comment

I was going to try to do this blog with some kind of order or direction, but I realize that if ever you want to know something about Arashi, there is a site out there for it that does the job far better than I ever could. That being said, I’m not giving up on the blog, but just the idea of order. (((((=

So for today let’s discuss this– I got my package in the mail today where I was able to get 57 magazines / photobooks (yes, I counted right and you read that right) which was a freaking steal for $471 including shipping. All brand new. With all the extras. Not reprints (or do magazines even have reprints? I’m guessing not~ or at least, the site I got it from wouldn’t since it only stocks the item once and once it’s out, it’s out ^^ heh.

Anyway, at retail price the total of the items comes to around $545 so just starting from there I saved quite a bit. Add on the bonus gift they sent me (a huge photobook for Aoi Miyazaki that retails for 9240 yen or over $100 O_O) On top of that what really REALLY made this worth it was the fact that about half of the items were back issues that are insanely hard to find now AND many of them are also special issues commemorating Arashi’s 10 year Anniversary.

Plus free shipping.

So, yeah, I am completely, 100% satisfied ^^V The one item I couldn’t get my hands on was the GQ Japan Feb. 2010 issue which featured Sakurai Sho as one of the Men of the Year. >< It was sold out. I had tried to buy it ten days after it went on sale ><” Insanity! M’ I right? heh but it’s ok, I managed to pick up Nino’s issue from all the way back in 2006 with Clint Eastwood and other cast members from Iwo Jima and also last year’s “Men of the Year” issue featuring Jun on the cover ^^V 성공!

There you have it~ I took a bunch of pictures of the mags already and I’ll put some up later~ Until then, check this out

It looks like he’s praying. I wonder if any of the Arashi members ever thought about that kind of stuff seriously. I know Christianity is not popular in Japan, but still, I wonder~ heh

Before the rainbow, there was ARASHI

^^V

If you don’t already know, Arashi is the name of a 5-member Japanese singing group under Johnny’s Entertainment agency. It has been over 10 years since their debut (Sept. 15, 1999) and in the span of those 10 years they have made an incredible impact not just within Johnny’s, J-Pop, or even Japan, but have left their mark all around Asia (and sometimes beyond~).

These boys have done it all–music, television, dramas, movies, newscasting, stageplays, an art exhibition.. and what sets them apart from other groups who have done the same (which is pretty much no one btw) is that they did it well. Everything.

I could go on and on about why they are so great. It would be impossible to give all the reasons for why I love and admire them so much.

.. but here’s to trying~ ^^V

And there they are~~ BONUS: there is one extra person.. try to find the one that does not belong (;
